Frequently Asked Questions (Answers Too!)

Church Worship Services

  • Where is the church located?
We are in the heart of Lake Jackson at 401 Yaupon St. Please see a map and other key information about our location here.
  • Where do I go if I'm a first time visitor?
To make it easy, we recommend that all visitors come in the main entrance on Yaupon St. The main entrance is a set of double-glass doors just to the right of the big blue "First Baptist Church" sign (see pic to the right). You will find a nice crosswalk from our parking lot and a wide sidewalk with handrails that ushers you into the building. Once you enter the building, you will be met by a greeter who can assist you to the Welcome Center. From there, helpful folks will direct you (even escort you) to your meeting place.
  • When are your main services and ministries?
For starters, visitors typically like to know the times of our worship services and Sunday School small group time. Our Sunday School for all ages is each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Our Sunday morning worship service is at 10:30 a.m. and our evening worship service is at 6:00 p.m. Of course, there is so much more going on. For more times, please see our full ministry schedule.
  • What should I wear when I come to church?
Whatever makes you comfortable. Our congregation is very diverse, as you will see guys wear everything from suits to jeans and casual shirt (and everything in between). We have ladies that wear dress pants and others wear dresses. It's not uncommon to see folks in shorts. Essentially, we want you to be yourself while being a part of a faith family that recognizes the importance of reverence and respect for our Lord.
  • Do you have a nursery for smaller children?
Yes. Please visit our Preschool Ministry page for more details.
  • What style of worship will I experience in worship services?
This is a tough one only because people tend to get tripped up by terms and preconceived notions. In our services, you will enjoy a balance of hymns, praise choruses, and the latest songs of adoration. You can expect to be lead by a worship leader assisted by an ensemble and a full choir. Our vocalists are backed by a fantastic five piece band complete with guitars, drums and keyboard and piano. At FBCLJ, there is freedom to worship whether you like to raise your hands, clap, shout or be perfectly still. We'll leave that between you and God!

You can also expect music specials like vocal solos or instrumentals. You'll see an occasional skit or video that compliments our time together.
  • Can I get a DVD copy of the worship service or sermon?
Yes. DVDs of services are available through the Music Office (297-2496) at a cost of $5 each. You may also visit our sermon page and view past sermons.
  • Are your worship services on TV?
Yes. Please see our TV schedule here.

  • What is the address of the church?
401 Yaupon St. Lake Jackson, Texas 77566
  • How do I find the church offices?
The main entrance to our church offices is on the Yaupon St. Look for the glass, double doors underneath the big blue "First Baptist Church" sign and marquee. Our offices are just inside those doors to the left. Signage will assist you once you enter the building. See picture to the right of our main entrance.
  • What are the office hours of the church office?
    Weekdays 9:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m.
  • Can I have my wedding at your church?
Yes. Please call the church office and speak with the pastor's secretary at 297-2496. They will be able to give you the wedding policies and any info regarding applicable facility fees. Calendaring restrictions may apply.
  • Is your facility handicap accessible?
Yes. From our ramps and rails around our buildings to our large elevators and wide halls, our facility is easily accessible. Our water faucets, bathrooms and classrooms are outfitted to provide the care you may need.

  • Do I have to be a member to attend your church?
No. Every week we enjoy visitors from all walks of life as well as frequent attenders who have not joined our church. Make no mistake about it, we believe God's plan is for every believer to belong and thrive as a member of a local body of believers. We are ready to assist you whether you are seeking to join our church or just "checking us out."
  • How do I become a member of your church?
There are four basic ways in which you would join the church:

    1. Commit your life to Christ. (This means you have accepted or want to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.)

    2. Join our church by baptism. (If you are coming as a new Christian who has not been baptized or if you are coming from a church of another denomination)

    3. Join the church from another Baptist Church (If you want to transfer a membership letter from another Baptist church.)

    4. Join our church by statement. (If your church membership record is not available for transfer, or if you were once, though not presently, a Baptist church member.)

If you are interested in joining our church family, we recommend that you come forward during the response time at the end of the worship service to indicate your desires. This is the best way to get plugged in and establish relationships quickly. You also have the option of communicating your intentions with a minister at your convenience.

  • How can I find out if my membership information is on file at FBCLJ?
Contact the Pastor’s ministry assistant at 297-2496 ext. 12 and she can provide you with that information.
  • How can I transfer my membership to another church?
Ask the new church to submit a request for letter of transfer to our church office and they will handle the rest. It is a good idea to follow up with the new church to make sure they have received and recorded what our office has sent them.

Upward Basketball is a 10-week season (See Key Dates). The first three weeks prior to the Christmas holidays consist of only one-hour practices. After the holidays, a one-hour practice and a one-hour game will be conducted for seven weeks. Practices will be on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Games are always on Saturday. Game times on Saturdays can vary.
  • Where are practices/games held?
Your child's team will be assigned a practice gym that you will use each practice. We are using First Baptist Church Lake Jackson, First Baptist Church Clute, Christ Lutheran Church and First Presbyterian Church for our practice gyms. Games for grades 1-2 boys & girls and 3-4 grade girls will be played at FBC Lake Jackson. The 3-4 grade boys, 5-6 boys & girls will be played at Brazosport Christian School.
  • Can I request that my child be on the same team as his/her friend?
No. We have no provision for requesting friends to be on the same team. Actually, we have no provision for linking kids in any way (unless two parents maximum coach a team). We believe this promotes the balancing of teams and also the kids making new friends!
  • May I coach my child's team?
Yes, provided that you complete the necessary steps including passing a criminal background check and attending mandatory coach training (and, of course, based upon availability). We'd love to have you join in! You can sign-up to coach here.

  • Will my children be on the same team?
If your children are in the same age division (1st & 2nd Grade Division, 3rd & 4th Grade Division, and 5th & 6th Grade Division), they will automatically be placed on the same team. There is no need to request it. Otherwise, they will be placed on different teams in the appropriate division.
  • Are there other ways to keep up with Upward news and updates?
The very best way to keep up with our Upward league is to "like" our Facebook page .
  • Can I register my child at evaluation nights?
After the registration deadline, all registrants will be considered to be on a "waiting list" and subject to availability. By the time evaluations roll around, the waiting list is generally long and availability is slim. Whereas we allow you to register at evaluations, the chances are much lower than getting it done on time. Please help us by communicating this to your friends and to the community as we do not want anyone left out.
  • Where can I find more information about Upward Sports?
You may visit their main website here or you may see more FAQ's for parents here
  • Will my child tryout for a team, and how will he/she be placed on a team?
There are no tryouts in Upward Basketball & Cheer. Each child will attend a mandatory evaluation/orientation night (see Key Dates) where basketball players will be guided through a few skills and drills that help identify each child's skill level. These evaluations are designed to create balanced teams and give each player an opportunity to improve his/her basketball skills. Cheerleaders will go through a brief orientation. Each child will also have the opportunity at evaluations to fit for jerseys, be measured for height and handle outstanding balances.
